The NP camp and Senator Manny Villar once again showed their strong popularity, this time in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.
Over 200,000 people came to watch the concert-rally "Wowowillie Meets Rockatropa" where it seems that Filipino entertainment and politics are hand-in-hand in delivering joy, excitement, and hope to the masses.
You know what, I have been having thoughts about this entertainment-politics sphere in the Philippines. One question that comes to my mind is this: "Why oh why does the showbiz/entertainment industry meddle so much in politics???"
I'm sure other countries have similar issues regarding this, but it is so prevalent in our country that government and showbiz can be seen as intertwined already.
For politicians, especially the aspiring ones and without a known family name , it would seem that the only way to get popular is through and endorsement from a celebrity. This is evident and I feel that I do not even need to mention names, this occurs practically every elections, whether presidential, senatorial, any postition...
Honestly, in my opinion, this method works. This works especially in our country where most people rely on common mediums (TV/radio/newspapers) for their leisure and entertainment; through the celebrities, the candidates get more exposure. My problem with it however, is the essence of endorsing a POLITICAL candidate, meaning the celebrity merely does the endorsing simply because of the money to be payed, or as a favor. Wouldn't it be much more appealing if the celebrity genuinely supports the candidate???
Of course it would be a basic M.O. for the celeb to know the basics about the candidate... but for a celeb to know the candidate in a deeper sense, the sense of having a real purpose of serving the country honestly and with determination, i think that is what real celebrity endorsing is supposed to be about.
I believe that the celebrities endorsing Manny Villar are doing real, honest service to their countrymen. They are simply helping out a presidential candidate who they belive, trust and understand to win the elections in May. No one can deny the good that has come out of the Manny-Willie colaoration. To mention a few things, they have given out scholarships to kids who would have never experienced proper education, and also gave away houses to those who are in need of shelter. I am pretty sure there will be a LOT more projects and occurrances where the Manny-Willie team will make their generous and kind hearts be felt.
One can see that both of them really wish for the people in poverty to uplift their lives the best they can. Willie, on one hand, helps the poor through his noontime show. He makes them dance, sing, laugh, basically reminding them that even if life is full of problems, one can still take time to enjoy life... and at the same time attempt to win simple games to gain capital to alleviate their hardships.
On the other hand, Senator Villar helps the poor in a less entertaining, but more meaningful way. Being a public servant, it is his job to aid the people, but what is admirable about him is that to him, being a public servant is not a job, it is his destiny.
Needless to say, Villar has been working to eradicate the word poverty in our vocabulary. Hopefully after the elections, Villar will continue his advocacy, in MalacaƱang ;-)
